GET HANDS-ON, GROW WITH CONFIDENCE
Sterilised grain bags give you a prepared starting point for growing gourmet mushrooms. Choose millet or rye, pair your grain spawn with a suitable culture, and follow the growing guide through each stage.
01 What is a sterile grain spawn bag?
It’s a bag of prepared grain that has been sterilised and is ready to be inoculated with a suitable gourmet mushroom culture. Once colonised, the grain spawn can be mixed with a compatible bulk substrate.
02 What’s the difference between millet and rye grain?
They’re two different grain options for starting spawn. Our millet bag contains a millet and milo blend, while the rye bag contains organic rye. Choose the grain you prefer.
03 Do the grain bags arrive already colonised?
No. The grain is sterilised but not inoculated, so you can choose which suitable gourmet mushroom culture to use.
04 Does the bag include a culture syringe?
No, a culture syringe is sold separately. Liquid cultures for gourmet varieties are available through our store.
05 How do I use a grain spawn bag?
Inoculate the grain with a suitable gourmet culture and allow it to colonise. Once it’s fully colonised, mix it with a compatible bulk substrate. Follow the product guide for the steps and conditions for your setup.
06 Can I grow mushrooms directly from the grain bag?
Grain spawn is usually mixed with a bulk substrate to provide more room for the mycelium to grow. CVG substrate is one option; the right choice depends on the mushroom species and your setup.
07 What types of mushrooms can I grow with these bags?
The grain bags can be used with gourmet varieties such as Lion’s Mane, Oyster and Shiitake. Use a suitable culture for your chosen species and follow local laws and regulations.
08 How long does grain take to colonise?
It can take several weeks, depending on the culture and growing conditions. Check the product guide for the recommended conditions and what to expect as the grain colonises.
09 How should I store my grain spawn bag?
Use it soon after delivery if you can. If you’re not ready to use it, store the sealed bag in the fridge. The grain spawn should last at least 12 months when refrigerated.
10 What should I do if my grain isn’t colonising?
Growing conditions and culture can affect colonisation time. Check the troubleshooting guide first; if you still need help, contact our team with your order details and a clear photo of the bag.
